How I Work as a Forward Deployed Engineer for an E-commerce Business

I am currently working across several departments of an e-commerce company. My role is not limited to writing code from a fixed ticket. I study how each team works, find the data and workflow problems behind their requests, and build systems that connect analytics, machine learning, marketing and sales operations.

The company is not named because this is active client work. This article describes my responsibilities and technical approach without sharing confidential data or internal results.

Starting with the business workflow, not a predetermined tool

I begin by working with the people closest to the problem. For this engagement, that means understanding how CRM, analytics, marketing and sales teams currently collect data, compare performance, create campaigns and follow up with leads. I map the systems they already use, the manual handoffs between departments and the places where incomplete or inconsistent data slows decisions.

This discovery becomes an implementation plan: which data needs to be cleaned, which APIs need to be connected, which steps should stay human-reviewed and which repetitive steps can be automated. That is how I approach forward deployed engineering: business context, technical design and implementation stay connected.

CRM analysis, anomaly detection and useful ML features

The analytics work begins with CRM and operational data. I clean and normalize the available records, examine their quality and engineer features that make the information more relevant for analysis. I then use machine-learning methods to detect anomalies and outliers that may indicate unusual performance, data-quality issues or patterns worth investigating.

I am also building a pipeline that helps teams compare statistics and analytics through model-generated signals. The goal is not to show a model score without context. The output needs to help a business user understand what changed, where it changed and what deserves attention. Clean data, appropriate features and a usable comparison layer are all part of the same solution.

Relevant capabilities: CRM data analysis, data cleaning, feature engineering, anomaly detection, outlier detection, Python, SQL, machine learning and business intelligence.

Connecting marketing inputs to creative production

For the marketing team, I am building automation that continuously fetches approved inputs from Google Drive and organizes the material needed for campaigns. The workflow supports grouping images, preparing ad creatives, defining target-audience inputs and producing material for UGC-style advertising.

This turns a scattered creative process into a controlled pipeline. Teams can provide their own uploaded images or use other supported inputs, while background processing handles larger files and longer-running jobs. Human review remains important before campaigns are published; automation prepares and organizes the work so the team can move faster and more consistently.

Building reliable background processing for files and creatives

The system uses BullMQ and Redis to queue work instead of forcing every upload or creative task to finish inside a single web request. Worker threads process jobs in the background, while Supabase provides file storage. For large uploads, I use chunking strategies so files can be transferred and processed more reliably.

This architecture separates user-facing actions from resource-intensive processing. It also creates clearer boundaries for retries, job status and failure handling. The result is a foundation that can support custom image uploads and additional creative sources without making the main application wait for every operation.

Relevant technologies: BullMQ, Redis, worker threads, Supabase Storage, chunked uploads, background jobs and asynchronous processing.

Shopify, HubSpot and n8n sales automation

Another part of the engagement addresses inbound sales automation. The company already has e-commerce, lead and workflow tools, but the team needs them to operate as one process. I am designing a supervisor-agent workflow that can fetch the required information from Shopify, the e-commerce store and HubSpot, then coordinate the next action through n8n automations.

I use caching strategies around external API requests to improve response time and avoid unnecessary repeated calls. The supervisor layer is responsible for choosing the relevant tools and data for each request, while the workflow layer handles predictable operational steps. This combination supports faster responses without treating every sales interaction as an unconstrained AI task.

Relevant technologies: Shopify APIs, HubSpot, n8n, AI agents, tool orchestration, API caching, inbound sales automation and CRM integration.

What makes this forward deployed engineering

This work crosses normal department boundaries. A CRM problem can become a data-engineering and ML task. A marketing bottleneck can require file infrastructure, queues and worker processes. A sales request can require API integration, caching, agent supervision and workflow automation.

My responsibility is to translate those operational needs into a system the company can actually use. I move between stakeholder discovery, data analysis, architecture, implementation and iteration with the teams. The technology matters, but it is selected to solve the workflow rather than becoming the goal itself.

Direct answers about this work

What does a forward deployed engineer do for an e-commerce company?

A forward deployed engineer works directly with business teams, studies their operational problems, connects existing systems and delivers working software. In this engagement, my work spans CRM data, machine learning, marketing creative operations, Shopify, HubSpot and sales automation.

How can machine learning improve e-commerce operations?

Machine learning can identify anomalies and outliers, compare performance patterns and turn cleaned operational data into more useful signals. Reliable results depend on data cleaning, feature engineering and presenting model outputs in a form teams can act on.

How can Shopify, HubSpot and n8n work together?

APIs and workflow automation can connect store activity, customer data and lead records. A supervisor agent can coordinate those tools, apply caching for faster responses and route sales or operational actions through controlled workflows.
